In the year 2002, the album was relaunched in a 5.1 DVD-Audio format. It can thus be determined that to what extreme Hotel California became popular and is still in demand.

According to the belief of many Eagles fans, a hotel situated in Mexico named Hotel California is the inspiration for the album. The tile track of the album Hotel California by Eagles touches on a variety of themes. Some of the most prominent themes featured in the track are death, temptation, loss of innocence, complications in love and relation and short lived nature of fame. The Eagles members have expressed the view that the album stands as a metaphor for USA’s addiction for materialism and the resultant decadence. The concluding track of the album "The Last Resort", gives a depiction of the downfall of society.

The group used the picture of Beverly Hills Hotel in the cover of the album. As one can easily assume, the album Hotel California by Eagles got several prestigious nominations for music awards and managed to bag some of them. It won two Grammy awards. The title track was selected as the best record of 1978. Another track named "New Kid in Town” got the award for Best Arrangement for Voices.
